Congratulations on your surgery! The hard part is over. Now, a smooth recovery is key to achieving the best possible vision. Most patients are amazed at how quickly they heal, but following these instructions is crucial for your safety.
The First 24 Hours
Immediately after surgery, your eye may feel groggy or slightly heavy. This is normal. Alternatively, you might feel nothing at all due to the anesthesia. Here is what to focus on:
- Rest Your Eyes: Keep your eyes closed as much as possible for the first few hours.
- Shield Up: Wear the protective eye shield we provided while sleeping or napping to prevent accidental rubbing.
- No Driving: Do not drive yourself home. Have a family member or friend assist you.
Recovery Timeline
Day 1
Vision may be blurry. You might feel mild itching or grittiness. Start your eye drops as prescribed.
Week 1
Vision clears significantly. Most normal activities can resume, but avoid heavy lifting or bending.
Month 1
Eye is fully healed. You'll have a follow-up exam to check your final prescription for glasses (if needed).
Do's & Don'ts
Please DO:
- Use your eye drops exactly as prescribed.
- Wear sunglasses when outside to protect from bright light and dust.
- Read, watch TV, and use your computer in moderation.
- Wash your hands before touching near your eye.
Please DON'T:
- Rub your eye! This is the most important rule.
- Get water, soap, or shampoo directly in your eye for the first week.
- Lift heavy objects (over 5-10 kg) or strain yourself.
- Bend over at the waist (keep your head above your heart).
- Swim or use a hot tub for at least 2 weeks.
Understanding Your Eye Drops
You will likely be prescribed 2-3 types of eye drops. Proper spacing is important.
How to Apply Drops
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Tilt your head back and look up.
- Gently pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket.
- Squeeze one drop into the pocket. Do not let the bottle tip touch your eye.
- Close your eye gently for 1 minute.
- Wait 5-10 minutes before applying a different type of drop.
