Do you spend more than 2 hours a day on a digital device? If so, you are likely experiencing some degree of Digital Eye Strain (DES), also known as Computer Vision Syndrome. In today's connected world, our eyes are working harder than ever before.
What is Digital Eye Strain?
Digital Eye Strain describes a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged use of computers, tablets, e-readers, and mobile phones. The level of discomfort appears to increase with the amount of digital screen use.
Common Symptoms
If you experience any of these after a long workday, you likely have DES:
Fatigue
Feeling that your eyes are heavy, tired, or sore, often accompanied by difficulty focusing.
Dryness
Screens reduce our blink rate by up to 66%, leading to dry, scratchy, and irritated eyes.
Blurred Vision
Temporary blurring of distance or near vision after staring at a screen for too long.
Did You Know?
We normally blink 15-20 times a minute. When watching a screen, this drops to only 5-7 times a minute! This is the primary cause of screen-related dry eye.
Why Does It Happen?
- Poor Lighting: Using a device in a dark room or with glare reflecting off the screen.
- Viewing Distance: Holding devices too close or sitting too far from monitors.
- Posture: "Text neck" and poor seating ergonomics contribute to strain.
- Uncorrected Vision: Using the wrong prescription glasses (or none at all) forces eyes to overwork.
The Golden Rule: 20-20-20
The most effective way to combat eye strain is also the simplest. Dr. Maurya recommends the 20-20-20 Rule:
Every 20 minutes...
Look at something 20 feet away...
For at least 20 seconds.
This simple habit relaxes the focusing muscles inside the eye and reduces fatigue significantly.
About Blue Light
Digital screens emit high-energy blue light. While not inherently dangerous in small amounts, prolonged exposure at night can disrupt your sleep cycle (circadian rhythm) and contribute to eye strain.
Recommendation: Use "Night Mode" or "Blue Light Filter" settings on your devices after sunset. Considerations for blue-light blocking glasses can also be discussed during your consultation.
Tips for Relief
- Blink More: Make a conscious effort to blink fully and frequently.
- Adjust Brightness: Your screen should match the brightness of your surroundings.
- Text Size: Increase text size to avoid squinting.
- Artificial Tears: Use lubricating eye drops to keep eyes moist.
- Computer Glasses: Get a prescription specifically for your working distance.
